Preface to Jeremy Moon: paintings & drawings 1962-1973 exhibition catalogue
by Joanna Drew, 1976
Jeremy Moon had his first one-man exhibition in 1963, after only two years as a professional painter. In 1973 he was killed in a motorcycle accident. At the time a memorial exhibition was held at the Rowan Gallery where he had exhibited regularly. On that occasion many of his fellow artists showed work of their own, alongside Jeremy Moon's last paintings. The respect which he won as an artist, despite the briefness of his working career, is confirmed by the inclusion of seven of his key paintings in the current survey of British art in Milan Arte Inglese Oggi 1960-76 at the Palazzo Reale.
The present exhibition, which is our own tribute, surveys his achievement and includes work from the first year of his full-time commitment to painting up to his last completed canvas.
We are grateful, as always, to the many collectors, private and public, who have so generously lent their paintings to the exhibition and we are indebted to the Rowan Gallery, especially Alex Gregory Hood and Celia Plunkett for their encouragement and constant helpfulness throughout the exhibition's preparation. We are particularly grateful to the artist's widow, Beth Moon, for her patient help during the planning stages of the exhibition and catalogue. We hope that Norbert Lynton's introduction and commentary encourages careful and responsive attention to the work and would like to thank him for the care with which it has been written and researched.
